Barney's Story.

Barney was a 7 1/2 Year Old Cocker Spaniel. He was an amazing dog. He was so Loyal and Loving. On Monday 31st January he went to the vets as he was showing signs of being sick, 6 days later Barney passed away. This is his story.

Early hours of Monday morning, the 31st of January, Barney was whimering around the bedroom, he was restless and was crying. My Mum got out of bed to let him out the garden. He was vomiting up a bile substance. He went back to bed and he got up a further five times wanting to go out. On Monday Morning. he came into my bedroom after leaving my parents bedroom and he was whimering on my bed. He was very restless and couldn't get comfortable. Through out the day he didnt get sick but was moaning and streching, when he streched he would hold the strech for longer than usual. We offered him food, but he refused, which was very unlikely of Barney. About 4 oclock, we decided to take him to the vets as we thought he could have indegestion as he was burping/belching alot. We thought maybe there was something the vets could give him to release the gas if he had indegestion.

When we got to the vets, the vet examined Barney and asked us what he ate and when he was last sick. She touched his stomach and he wouldn't let her feel his stomach. He was obviously in discomfort. She then took Barney's temperture and it was normal. We told the vet his urine was very orange, she said he was probably dehydrated as his gums were normal colour, and he didnt look jaundice. She said it could be pancreatitis but it could also be a stomach bug. She gave Barney a injection to stop him being sick and an antibiotic injection. She wanted us to bring him back then next morning, to check on him.
The next day, we bought him back and the vet seemed to think he was alot better. Barney allowed her to touch his lower stomach area and she said she would put him on a course of antibiotics and if there was any problems we were to bring him back in. When he came home he still wasn't his normal self. Around Three o' clock he was crying again so I gave him his tablets in some rice and little pieces of beef, he ate the beef and left the rice. He then slept for most of the day. When he woke up he went and ate the reminder of his dinner. and was looking for our other dogs dinner. We thought he was back to usual self.
Wednesday morning, he didn't want any breakfast as he usually looks for it  but throughout the day he seemed to be ok, had a little whimer now and then but nothing serious. The vet did say to us, recovery from Pancreatitis was slow process. He ate his dinner wednesday night.

On Thursday, he wouldnt touch food at all. he wasn't being sick thou or he wasn't streching but he was starting to burp/belch again. However we manged to give him his tablets. He woke up early Friday morning and was getting sick again. Again he was vominting up bile. This happened twice throughout the night. The next day he was moaning and whimering again. He got sick again about 12oclock so my mum decieded to bring him back to the vets.
At the vets she examined him again, he had no temperture and his gums were a normal colour. When she touched his stomach area he let out a little cry. She told us she would take some bloods and keep him in for a few days on IV fluids. Barney didnt seem to mind that he wasn't coming home with us.

At 7'oclock that evening the vet rang with Barney's blood results, she said his liver enzymes were very high, and his white blood cells were very high. She said this was due to the infection. At this stage it seemed to look like it wasnt food that caused this, it was more likely it was a bacterial infection that caused the pancreatitis because his liver was infected. However she ensured us his liver would repair and they would keep him in till Monday.
Saturday Morning, the vet who was on call that day rang and said was it ok if they did an X-Ray on Barney as when they took his temperture they noticed blood on the thermometer. We said they could do an xray. We were allowed to go and visit Barney that day. He looked very sick and frightened when we saw him. It was really upsetting to see him in that condidition. When we got home about two hours later the vet rang back with the x-ray results she said, everything was fine and there was no blood on the xray, and the blood up his back passage could just be where he was having diarrhea. The vet she was happy with his progress and she would just keep him in overnight to be on the safe side.

On Sunday 6th February. We got a call from the vet who was on call that day. It was a male vet this time. He said Barney was very weak. He went on to say that Barney had pulled out his IV fluid drip during the night, and this could be the reason he was weak. He went on to tell us the possible outcome of pancreatitis. He said his liver was affected and in some cases he could survive but have liver problems which would lead to a shoter life span, or he could make a full recovery or he could die in worst case scenario. The vet also mentioned that Barney was excreting black mass which could be being relesed from the bowels. He did say that the female vet took him out to do his business on the saturday night and he was pulling her around on the lead to smell the scent of other dogs. He seemed full of life, doing his normal things. We were told to ring back at 7 o'clock that evening. When we rang back we were told Barney had passed away at 6 o'clock. The vet told us that in servere cases the pancreas eats away at the liver. In the end his organs failed.
We were completley devasted. We collected Barney from the vets that night and bought him home. The next morning we buried Barney in his favourite part of the garden. The vets were shocked aswell, they didnt think Barney was that sick, however they said they can never predict the outcome of pancreatitis. Whatever treatment they give animals sometimes its just not enough.

This website was set up to make people more aware of how serious pancreatitis is.
